Letter: The Urgent Traffic Problem In Guildford Is Obvious

£250 million just to push the motorway traffic a mile or to on to the next jam. Really?

The only really urgent problem around the Guildford area is blindingly obvious. It’s the silly A3 flyover/by-pass that shrinks to two lanes from Burpham southwards.

What would that sort of money do to sort that out instead of just adding to it?

Apparently, Highways England isn’t going to look at that as it’s not in their remit.

Someone, and it’s not me, is living in a parallel universe.

    I think the problem is further south when the slip road from the Dennis roundabout joins the two-lane carriageway and again when the slip road from the cathedral roundabout joins the carriageway.

    Back in the mid-nineties, there was a scheme to widen the A3 to three lanes between the Dennis roundabout and the cathedral roundabout but the scheme got ditched, unfortunately, in the change to roads programme by the new government.

    Now that Highways England is looking at the A3 widening scheme between the A31 junction and Stoke Road Interchange, we have to wait to see what the agency is going to propose.

    Widening the A3 and dealing with the A31 slip roads is challenging. The two bridges over the A3 here cannot accommodate widening under them. The option to demolish and rebuild them would be immensely disruptive and expensive. However, there is a solution.

    The nearside northbound lane of the A3 could be taken under Hog’s Back and widened to two lanes. The A31 on-slip could be re-aligned and again widened to two lanes. These meet up at a signal controlled junction and two lanes proceed northwards to finally join up with the existing on-slip.

    The on-slip that is now hatched down to one lane for safety would be re-opened as two-lanes and joins the A3. The northbound single lane of the A3 would pass under the two bridges while the southbound is widened to three lanes by relocating the middle barrier.

    Three lanes of the A3 would pass under Beechcroft Footbridge and a dedicated off-slip would go past the Park & Ride, connecting with it and proceeding to meet up with the existing alignment just before Tesco roundabout but with an on-slip bifurcation lane back to the A3.

    Surrey University might consider building an access off this signalised junction as described above. These ideas have been on my website for a few years. These are shown in

    There appears to be no feasible answer to the traffic congestion in central Guildford and yet more and more schemes are presented.

    The construction of the station development does not bode well for our traffic problem or for those people living in that area.

    There are answers to traffic congestion in central Guildford but the councils have decided to go for a “do nothing” option and hoping that more bus users and cyclists would reduce traffic to an acceptable level. Only this is totally unrealistic.

    I have offered a solution as has the Guildford Vision Group, but both solutions require a new east-west route over the [railway] tracks and the river.

    Councils, as far as I am aware, have not considered this and consequently Solum was free to plan without making any provision for such a route.

    As we know that would not now be possible because Solum is going to erect the ‘Great Wall of Guildford’ and that would block this possible route.

    Foresight in planning is a most important aspect and strangely our councils seem not to think along the same line as many of us do.

    So Guildford would continue to become even further congested and eventually businesses would leave the town centre and relocate in surrounding towns.
