Letter: Guildford is the County Town and Should Have a County Museum

Guildford Museum 02From Fiona White

Lib Dem county councillor for Guildford West

Guildford is the county town of Surrey. It is essential that we have a museum which reflects local history and the history of Surrey as a whole.

Perhaps the first action of the Executive member [Cllr Davis] should have been to draw together all interested parties, including all political groups on the council and residents’ groups, to find a way of revitalising the museum while recognising that there are financial restraints.

As to his comments about The Guildford Dragon, the wonderful thing about this country is a free press. As far as I can see, there has always been an opportunity for counter-arguments by GBC Executive members, majority group councillors or local residents to answer any comments with which they disagree.

This should not become a Party political issue as decisions should be made for the benefit of Guildford, not for scoring political points. A town with the history of Guildford must have a museum in an appropriate and fitting locus.

Decisions on the future of Guildford’s museum should not be political but rather ones of common sense.

A town of Guildford’s history must have a museum. Could it be that given the tragedy that befell Clandon House and the Surrey Infantry Museum there could also be an option of combining the two? In my humble opinion it is a “no brainer”.

Regarding the idea of a Surrey museum based in Guildford. Surely we had the chance about ten years ago?

Woking applied, and were given the museum. A fine structure, built from scratch and well worth a visit.

Guildford is a little late in thinking that it deserves such a building now.

The Surrey History Centre is for printed records and images of those records. A museum would be for all kinds of objects. Ed

That was the same time as Guildford lost its chance for a re-furbished and upgraded sewage works which went to Basingstoke.

The council seems to have lost its way and any sense of good judgement. It is missing too many golden opportunities.
