If you are mourning the passing of Bar Centro on Sydenham Road, chin up: the restaurant will re-open on Thursday, November 28, with an enthusiastic new chef in the kitchen.

Daniel Britten, who reached the quarter-final of BBC Masterchef in 2008, is planning to serve local, seasonal food that looks and tastes “beautiful”.

Daniel said: “I want to bring a restaurant to Guildford that foodies can go to. My signature dish will be coffee-rubbed pork fillet and crispy ear served with winter squash puree, locally sourced.”

One of Daniel’s dishes – rabbit loin wrapped in pancetta, stuffed with black pudding, pea puree, morels, rabbit jus and pigs trotter.

Describing his Masterchef experience as “brilliant”, Daniel explained that when he appeared on the show he was very much the amateur. Following his TV success he gave up painting and decorating and worked in several Woking restaurants, including London House, Old Woking under the tutelage of chef Ben Piette.

Britten's logoBar Centro was a popular Italian restaurant which had been on the Guildford gourmet map for at least 18 years. It was owned by Roberto (fondly known as Robbie) Gardetto and Lorenzo Castiglioni, who also ran Cambio on South Hill.

Daniel explained:”Roberto and Lorenzo decided that they had reached an age where they wanted to move on and take things a little easier.”

The new restaurant changes direction and will offer Modern British cuisine. It is to be called Britten’s Restaurant, after the chef.

Thoroughly recommended. Brilliant food and atmosphere, yet not too expensive.
