Hundreds of people took part in last night’s torchlit procession from Guildford High Street to the top of The Mount where the Guildford Beacon was lit.

Led by a Nautical Training Corps band the procession made its way over Millbrook and the Portsmouth Road to climb the steep hill of The Mount, in fine late evening weather, before emerging into Cathedral Field where the beacon, one of over 4,ooo, stood ready.

After a short speech the Mayor, Cllr Jenny Jordan, lit the beacon. A single firework was launched into the sky and the band played the national anthem, sung enthusiastically by the crowd.

The NTC band from Littlehampton then played a short selection of tunes after which the crowd, having given the band warm applause, dispersed.

    I would like to express my appreciation for the great success of the beacon lighting ceremony – to the Lions for their organisation and provision of all the torches which enhanced the event so much; to the Council for the preparation of the site on the Cathedral Field; to the police for their monitoring of vehicle access and provision of officers for supervising the event; and to the sea Nautical Training Corps band for providing the music (and marching up the hill!).
    It was a brilliant event – thank you.

    Fab evening and excellent view!
    I was very proud of the whole unit making it up that hill and that myself and the other helpers weren’t set alight!
    PS That’s my boy with the symbols. Proud mummy:)
