There has been a café at top of Newlands Corner for over 50 years. And it’s as popular today with walkers, cyclists and visitors by car as it has ever been.
It was pouring with rain on the Friday lunchtime we visited. But it didn’t appear to deter people coming to this well-known Surrey beauty spot – although the lovely views were not at their best.
Suffice to say, The Barn café was buzzing. It’s not difficult to see why when you cast your eyes over the blackboards upon which a wide range of meals, snacks and drinks are chalked up.
From the start, this wasn’t going to be a simple visit for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake – the lunchtimes meals that were being served looked too good to miss.
Although the beer-battered cod and chips at £9.95 was very tempting, we went for the English breakfast at £6.99. The picture below says it all.
If that’s not to your taste, you can choose from: soup with crusty bread (£4.99), roast of the day (£9.95), mushrooms topped with goats cheese (£8.99) – the list goes on… Jacket potatoes (£6.49), salads (£8.99), and so on.
All the coffees were priced at £1.99, and there was a good selection of cakes – chocolate, sponge, lemon, poppy seed all at £3 per slice.
When the weather is fine, there is plenty of outside seating, and there is a decent sized car park if you have not arrived on foot or by bike.
It’s a family run business and they certainly take pride in the food they serve.

More than just a café, a country eating house. We employ fully qualified and talented chefs offering the best in British food. Our menu is vast, whether you want a sandwich or a three course meal we are sure we can meet your needs.
Our food is BRITISH and somewhat old fashioned – cooked to order – so if we are busy and we usually are, be prepared to wait, it will be worth it. No reheating allowed! We now have a clientèle just visiting us for our food. No dress code – dogs and children welcome – if well behaved!
